The name NAMI stands for National Alliance on Mental Illness. It is a support and educational group for those persons (and their family and friends) living with a mental illness. We are also advocates for fair laws concerning issues about health insurance. This group receives financial help from our church for educational material when needed. We have been organized since April of 2000. The meetings are held here at Memorial United Methodist Church once a month on the 3rd Thursday at 6:30 PM in the library. Mental illness is the most misunderstood illness of all illnesses. We are making great strides in research so that the public is more aware of the better medication to help with these types of illnesses. Education helps to stop the stigma of being mentally ill, but we have a long way to go in this area. Many persons have the better known illnesses, such as bipolar or schizophrenia, and with proper medication, live normal lives. Others who live with severe depression or obsessions live in misery because of the fear of the stigma associated with mental illness. Understanding the illness, and the medications available to help, have improved the lives of mentally ill persons and the lives of family and friends.
Friends, if you or anyone you know suffers from depression, anxiety, or any other diagnosed mental illness, we are here for you. Everything in our meetings is kept as confidential.
Our support group understands these problems and helps with love, understanding, and information on getting the help these persons need. Betty Porter is our affiliate leader of NAMI and would be willing to answer any questions you may have. She may be reached by email at betty.porter@coldwellbanker.com
